Below are some common myths about heaters, furnaces, and AC systems that we hear from customers every day, as well as the truth about the best ways to keep your home comfortable.
Bigger is better in heating and cooling.
FALSE. If a system is oversized, it produces too much heat and cannot push the heat out of your system fast enough. If this happens, the heat builds up in the core of the system (the heat exchanger) and eventually leads to cracks in the heat exchanger, which allows CO to seep into your home. Once this happens, the system is usually beyond repair and will need to be replaced again.
If the system is oversized for your ductwork, it can “short cycle,” which means that it turns on, runs for a few minutes, then turns off, then back on again. You could compare it to driving your car down the road with a lot of red lights. That starting and stopping is terrible for your system and can cause parts to prematurely break down.
Your ductwork does not need to be checked when you replace the heater.
FALSE. If your ductwork has not been measured as part of your replacement system then you could run into trouble. If your furnace is sized correctly to your home and the ductwork is too small to handle the distribution of heat, the heat will back up in the heat exchanger and crack it. On the other hand, if your ductwork is too big it could cause uneven air flow throughout your home, causing some rooms to be comfortable, while others may be too hot or too cold.
If I don’t hear my system running, I am saving money.
FALSE. Newer systems are so quiet and efficient that many times customers don’t hear them turn on and off. Newer systems turn on and modulate so that they are always running, and they automatically ramp up or ramp down the speed of air blowing without ever turning off. Older systems turn on, produce heat, and turn off. Starting and stopping like this can cut the life of your heating system short.
